Hello, I am exhausted trying to remedy a Google storage problem and eyes are crossed from viewing youtube videos on the subject.
I would like to transfer all my photos from my Google photos or Gallery to the laptop and then delete them to create space.
However, I tried deleting one photo from the phone and it deleted the photo from Google photo too.
What am I doing wrong? I don't want to lose the photos and dont want to pay for additional storage if I can view them on the laptop. Thanks in advance.

I think the system uploaded your photos to Google Photos and deleted them from the phone. You'll need to first download them all to the device and then copy to the laptop.
I might be wrong though with the deletion thing.

Thank you for responding...one of my reasons for upgrading from the 7t 128 to the 8t 256 was for the memory. When I checked the storage on the phone it only showed 356MB in photos and 477MB in the gallery. However, when I went to settings it shows 37.27GB of 256GB free. Google has 14.12GB of 15 GB(94%) Used. Gmail 5.47 GB and Google photos 8.3 GB. Why such a descrepancy? I can deal with the gmail..I have a lot of attachments from grandkids and I can download them to outlook mail...I think. Will I have enough space to place all the photos back on the device to then move them to the laptop and delete from the phone? That's what I am concerned about.

In my opinion, you can first download all photos to device. Then make sure to disable backup to cloud so the photos don't again upload back. Once done, just copy all photos to laptop, crosscheck if all is well and finally delete all photos from the phone.

I appreciate your quick response. So I need to connect to laptop with USB, go to Google photos on laptop and copy all photos to oneplus 8t...check to see if all were copied to my satisfaction then delete from my phone...is this correct?

I did not have Google Drive installed on my laptop(new) and Microsoft said it is not an approved application. Is it safe to download? This is what will backup all my photos correct?

It appears that Google Drive is still saying I have used 94%. There is a special for one month from $1.99 to $.49 for 100 GB. In order to have peace of mine and less stress I will take the offer of one month and return in January for a more permanent solution. Thank you so much for hrlping me and I hope before January I can come up with a better solution. Happy Holidays!

I am not sure what the problem you're facing is, I am assuming you want to backup photos from your device onto your laptop and deleting a photo deletes it from Google photos too? Usually this happens if the photos arent actually backed up to Google photos.

Yes, I wasn't aware I did not have Google Drive on myu laptop. However, it appeared I still was at 94% usage between photos, videos and gmail with attachments. I wanted to move all of those from google to my laptop and then delete from my phone. I lost a few photos I tried deleting from my phone once I saw them on the laptop but those too were deleted. I don't want to lose any more of my photos of my grandchildren so bit the bullet and increased storage by 100 GB until Jan 7th. Im hoping with the help of the oneplus community experts to come up with a solution by then. Thank you.

If you want here's a link that you can use to create a link to download all photos from your Google photos account:
    https://takeout.google.com/u/1/?hl=en&utm_source=google-account
(This is a site used to download data from your Google account including emails and stuff but we don't want all of that so we will exclude that in the next step)

    Simply login to your account

Click on deselect all as it has extra things that you definitely don't want
Scroll down to Google photos and select the checkbox, you should also see an include all albums option or something, from where if you want you can even choose which albums you want to download from Google photos.

Scroll down and select next step, you will now have to select a delivery method i.e. if you want it as a link or want to upload it to a cloud service etc. After choosing this click on create export and wait for some time (ranging from a minute to a couple of hours) and your file/link will be delivered to you according to what you chose.

Download the files and cross check if you have all your photos and only then delete them from your device.

PS. For the photos that you have already deleted have you checked in the recently deleted folder at the very bottom in the gallery on the albums page?

Yep that works as well, but personally I wouldn't do that because it isn't easy to sort through all the attachments as, as far as I know, all of them are downloaded into a single folder and it gets messy and hard to find a particular file.
