Did you try to set all permissions of whatsapp to Allowed?
With me ''Phone'' was not allowed, when I allowed it the bug disappeared, I think whatsapp was struggling and was confused to when to use the proximity sensor as long as it was not allowed. But it can be also any other permission that was not allowed that was bugging whatsapp

Did you also try the app I posted before? Also be sure to set battery to not optimize this app or it will stop after some minutes. It's working flawlessly for 48h already on my 7 pro

Thats a deal breaker of OP7 Pro. There must be a way to fix this even by disabling the sensor to avoid the accidental hang-ups when the sensor decides to turn on the screen while it touches your face
