It's produced in small batches. Invites equal the number of devices produced. I like it. Weeds out the entitled types and spoiled brats.

As mentioned all over the forums, you have to work a bit. It took me about 2 or 3 hours to get one, just by participating and not feeling (or acting) like I was entitled to one. Lots of invites are first-come first-served, you have to just be quick and diligent, most of all pay attention to the details and instructions. Lots of them go to the first ones that reply.

An example is that guy that left an email. Replying back on the forum? No, email him! I see people write, "PM me your email", and people reply in the thread with "Me, please!" I roll me eyes.

It's just a clever crowdsource marketing stunt. They want to get as many people buzzing about their product, so, they give the incentive that you may get an invite if you help add to the buzz. The more you add the more chance you have. The more interesting your contributions, the more interesting their market platform. It also creates at least an illusion of demand by manufacturing some exclusivity... if something is exclusive, it's desirable.

Maybe... But starvation as a marketing technique is only good if you have a credible reputation (like Apple has for example).

Here I believe it's more of a small batch manufactured + the hype needed.... Next version will be much more bigger once there is a big expectation and a crowd of buyers.

See what TIME magazine wrote on it few months back during I/O conference :
