I'm glad you all are so excited about this, but there's a lot of confusion here.

The release of the final Lollipop source from Google has not happened. There is a developer preview release, there is an SDK release, but there is no final source release.

That cannot happen until Google finishes building binary updates for all of its new and current Nexus products. So the first binary release of Lollipop is announced for November 3 when they start to ship the new Nexus 9. Then we will get releases for the Nexus 6, 4, 5, 7, and 10 in some order. Then they will merge all the final source variants of Lollipop and release the final Lollipop source.

When that happens, https://source.android.com/source/build-numbers.html will list a Lollipop release and instructions for checking the Lollipop sources out of the repo. And then the 90 day clock to getting Lollipop on the OPO will begin.

I hope that they can focus on bug fixes with Android L rather than trying to push it out the door.

Will finishing android L within three months require expanding the research team? Just a question out of morbid curiosity (not my cup of tea), if so is this signalling a ramping up of R&D related to the OnePlus, I feel as though I speak for the majority of non OnePlus owners when I say that news would be welcomed very warmly.

Awesome news, although I guess the CM-nightlies, which I'd use, will be available way earlier anyway.
