Well I create this new thread even though there are inumerous ones already about how bad, how crap, how degraded since introduction, generally criticizing the bad photography quality of the device allegedly is....
Very often myself as well as others (@NahbiCris, @borft, @Waveform Modifier, etc) have replied and showed that it is not the device and its stock camera app, but the photographers who do not take the time to learn how to best use their device. Of course the app can still be improved but it's absolutely not crap!
Now I generally advise people not to use HDR if they do not know exactly in which situations it might be useful. Also whenever possible do several shots of same subject, without, with hdr maybe even in Pro Mode fully automatic or with user defined configuration.
One of the many returning complaints with sample pics is selfies made with strong light in front of the lens i.e. behind the subject. These look overexposed, under saturated etc.
Well a bit like this, no HDR, no beautifying option used:
I used the exposure slider which appears when you tap on the preview screen to reduce luminosity, otherwise this would be the result :
Now this is a situation where HDR can and should be used as well as the exposure slider and this is the result :
I think any further comment is useless as it shows clearly that even on OnePlus 5T the HDR can do an excellent job... If you know how to use it.
PS. As oneplus hdr is based on software post-processing it's in fact not b true HDR. True one uses at least three sequential images at different exposures and then combines them into final result. Just for demonstration purposes I used Open Camera to show the procedure.
These are the three differently exposed pics of which none is really good:
And after processing that's the final result :
