    Hello friends,

    Qualcomm recently announced their latest flagship 8 series 5G platform - the Snapdragon 888. This new SoC is a considerable leap in performance compared to snapdragon 865, so much so Qualcomm even veered off from their usual naming scheme and skipped 87X series.

    I’m very excited to announce that OnePlus Community is inviting a special guest from Qualcomm to answer your questions about the Snapdragon 888. So if you guys have any questions about the new Mobile Platform, please feel free to ask and share them in the comments below.

    Without further ado, allow me to introduce our special guest, @Cisco. from Qualcomm.
    Cisco is a Senior Director and product marketing lead for Qualcomm’s technologies team. He oversees product marketing for technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Gaming, Camera, Audio, and other areas that touch the Snapdragon Mobile Platform. In his spare time, he is a tech enthusiast and enjoys playing with all sorts of gadgets like his DJI Mavic 2 Drone, Sony A6600 camera, and countless Android smartphones based on Snapdragon.

    Cisco will start answering your questions about Snapdragon 888 from Jan 15, 4pm HKT. Because of the limited time, he will be only answering no more than 20 questions in total. We appreciate your understanding, and please make sure you ask a great and interesting question!

    X55 can aggregate multiple 100 MHz concurrent carriers in mmWave (up to 800 MHz) or two sub-6 GHz TDD 5G NR carriers up to 200 MHz. X60 extends support including all key sub-6 FDD+FDD and FDD+TDD combinations. 5G carrier aggregation, when available in the network, supports improved average speeds, coverage and connectivity in challenging signal conditions – for example when you’re far from the cell tower.

    Snapdragon X60 also supports Voice over 5G NR (VoNR) for advanced voice services over the 5G network. We expect the rollout of VoNR to be aligned with the commercialization of X60.

    The baseband in X60 Modem-RF system is built on 5nm, compared to 7nm of that of X55, and it is also integrated into the Snapdragon 888 SoC. This results in die size reduction and improvements in power-efficiency.

    Snapdragon 888 with the all-new Qualcomm Spectra™ 580 ISP is the first Snapdragon with a Triple ISP. This lets you capture from three cameras all at the same time – capture three 4K HDR videos or three photos all at once. The Spectra 580 ISP also has architecture advancements that make improvements to capture speed and image quality. The 580 ISP captures 2.7 gigapixels per second, that’s 35% that its predecessor. It features image quality enhancements for capturing in low light, computational HDR video capture and AI based autofocus and auto exposure to produce images that are sharper and more colorful than ever.

Consumers desire more camera capabilities, better audio, faster connectivity and we look at all areas while placing a strong emphasis on battery life.     We’re entering a world where a photo will look like it was captured by a camera, but you wont know for sure. Snapdragon 888 features photo capture with Truepic. Photos captured by Truepic confirm to others that this is an authentic photo. Truepic harnesses our security technologies, our ISP and our cloud services to create a cryptographic-seal around photos captured by the camera. The cryptographic-seal protects pixels, date, time, location and the depth map. Truepic photos are compliant with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) standard.     The 6th Gen AI delivers a massive 26 Tops. Our AI partners harness this engine to improve quality during photo and video capture.     Absolutely, we've made signifcant power consumtion improvements across key technology areas. For example, Kryo CPU (25% improvement), Adreno GPU (20%), Camera and AI pieces have also seen better performance per watt. Coupled with a new 5nm process node, the improvements are noticeable depending on the application.

    It's like asking me to pick my favorite child :) I am very excited about some of the camera capabilities you'll see in upcoming 888 smartphones. I think 4K and HDR will continue to pick up steam and with our triple ISP technology, we can shoot from multiple cameras simultaneosly and use AI to create really awesome content.

    We've already done this with our Snapdragon Mobile platform found in Alway-on, Always connected PC like the Micrsoft Surface Pro X. We have pioneered this transition from smartphone to PCs using the power of our mobile architectures coupled with its battery benefits and paved the way for others (ahem Apple) to drive the PC market with mobile-based chipsets.

    On the Snapdragon 888, we redesigned the Qualcomm Hexagon processor so that the physical distances between the scalar, vector and tensor accelerators are now virtually gone. On top of its tightly coupled architecture, we’ve also added a large shared memory across these three different accelerators, so that they can share, and move around data faster and more efficiently, with that, we’ve increased up to thousand times faster hand-off time improvement in certain use cases in the nanosecond range.
    On the accelerators themself, the scalar accelerator has a 50% performance uplift, the tensor accelerator now has two times the compute capacity and we are also expending support for additional data types on the Vector accelerator. Power consumption wise, thanks to the new Hexagon architecture, we also increase the performance per Watt by three times so all the AI use cases are now more power efficient.

    We used Samsung for 7nm and 5nm, and while there are always challenges moving to a new node, we have a really good relationship with the fabs to ensure a smooth transition.

    It really depends on what the application is. Day to day activities is probably less noticeable than say playing high-end games, shooting 4K videos, and getting the best wireless connection (5G, 4G, WiFi) whereever you are.

    We have been desiging our own custom GPUs for over a decade. We are also the only mobile chipset company to have its own gaming brand with Snapdragon Elite Gaming while others haven't even attempted this yet. As we embark on our third generation of gaming features that will improve response times (we introduced a feature called Qualcomm Quick Touch), latency is still very dependent on your connection, whether it's 5G or WiFi. We have those boxes checked as well

    We have very talented camera engineers that figured out how to increase the ISP throughput by 35% compared to 865. The 2.7 Gigapixels per socond speeds of the Spectra ISP essentially allows three cameras to capture footage simultaneously

    We always deploy features in our chipsets focused on helping real life situations-- that is the premise of our chipset design philosophy. We also work with our OEMs to define these use cases and then look back at how our technologies can help address this need. For example, many handset makers are implementing multiple camera (3-5 cameras) and are looking for ways to shoot from them simultaenously, so we designed a triple ISP architecture to address these needs. They want to support staggered HDR sensors (which you will see alot of this year) and we desgined our camera pipeline to handle the demands of these speeds. They want to smoother zoom (better swtiching from camera to camera) so we enabled AI to address this need. And this is just focusing on our camera technologies.

AI that can replace a character and drop you into movie scenes, taking full advantage of the AI performance Snapdragon 888 has to offer, we are accelerating their video instance segmentation and fusion algorithms and even perform this real time in preview mode even before you start acting and recording. Along with Trinamix and our new 2nd gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub supporting dedicated AI hardware and new contextual data streams, we can now monitor your skin condition and recommend you the right moisturizer - changing the way how you approach your beauty routine. We’ve improved performance on everyday popular uses cases like further accelerator your lenses filters in Snapchat.
    Following up on last year’s success on real-time translation, we are making natural language processing (NLP) even faster and smarter by working with Hugging Face on accelerating their NLP models.

    Our Snapdragon platform is what you call a heterogenous computing environment, which means that many key cores are lit up and running congruently for any given application. This has been the case since the inception of our premium tier platform. When a camera application runs and AI is in the mix, the Spectra ISP and Hexagpon processor are running simulataneously to prioritize this application. Similar with gaming, the Adreno GPU, Kryo CPU and 5G are working together to deliver a smooth and immersive gaming experience.

You will see smartphones equipped with staggered HDR sensors, which will be the latest craze in multicamera technology. There will also be an abundance of AI powering these cameras, as well as voice assistant technologies. Gaming and gaming smartphones will see an uptick because of our Elite Gaming engine and features. Of course, 5G performance will be in practically every device this year with new and improved coverage.

    We announced our 3rd Gen Elite Gaming suite of features in the Snapdragon 888, which entails a 35% leap in GPU performance (our largest ever). We also introduced Game Quick Touch and VRS, which are two high sought after features that improves touch response times and gaming performance and efficiency, respectively. In addition, we continue to improve the 13 Elite Gaming features that we launched last year. Very excited about mobile gaming this year!

    What is/are biggest advantage(s) on integrating the X-60 modem into the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, compared to the external X-55 modem in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset?

    What do you have to say about that, @Cisco., is it s temporary thing, one that can be fixed via software update?

    I've big memory but nomenclature is not my strong point :rolleyes: so why Qualcomm decided to change name to the new 888 SD? Is there a particular event/reference/anything for choosing three times number 8? Thanks :)

    How is it the Snapdragon 888 seems cheaper than the 865/Plus? I mean it got the point where some phone manufacturers where choosing the 765G chipset over the 865.
