There are always risks. Other than running out of storage space, do you have any problems in particular? Moving to a new OS is not going to magically increase the physical memory capacity on your phone, other than any minor juggling of a few files here & there.

Well, you could break everything. Depending on your own particular circumstances, that may or may not be an issue - can you afford some downtime while you experiment / fix?

Yeah move all your media to a stick, computer or cloud and wipe the device and install LOS.
The benefits will be apparent in days.
If your SD is class 12 or above you could convert it to internal storage, giving yourself more system space to play with.

Is converting to internal storage an option only in LOS? I do not see it currently on my 1+X/OOS-3.1.4.

It's an option in Nougat so it should be in LOS.
Its been in every Nougat ROM I've looked at, it was a feature in MM that some decided to leave out.

Apologise that should have been class 10.
U3 would be ideal, but by nippers have been running class 10's for the last issues 3 months in their RN3's with no issues.

there was a time back in the days where you could easily brick the phone due to various reasons like the corrupt ROM, mistakes made while unlocking, installing, rooting. but it's all gone now. oneplus has officially released a video on YouTube where they show how to unlock bootloader and root the phone. use TWRP recovery instead. and then pick your choice of the various ROM available, gapps. wipe cache and data. there are tons of videos to show how to do all these.

I do not think the OPX will be able to take advantage of the the performance of a U3 micro SD card. U1 is enough

I dunno OP do skimp on stuff so maybe not.
Whatever you use when you go to format it as system storage, It will tell you if its good not good enough.

You should consider resurrection Remix because of the giant amount of available customisation :D

Trust me i have tried all roms and Tesla is most stable among them.Others have some issues(mainly network drop).
But the best combination for me is oos 3.1.4 + magisk(for root) + boeffla kernel(custom settings).Reasons:-
    1)Stock rom is most stable.
2)Camera is best on stock rom.
3)with boeffla kernel i use these settings (1.5Ghz max, smartmax governor, i/o scheduler fiop , internal read 1048, external read 2048, hotplug optimized, multicore powersave aggressive, undervolt -100mV).
With these settings my phone never heats up and runs buttery smooth.Easily gives me 5+ hr SOT on moderate usage.

I wouldn't say "most secured" considering custom ROMs are usually designed towards developing, although they can be used as daily drivers (depending on the ROM as some are less stable). But, if you are looking for a good mostly stable ROM, I recommend Resurrection Remix, when I used it, it had a pretty good battery life, and had little to no problems(for me that is).
