I don't game, so I know that anything above a 700 series chipset is overkill for me. But the problem is that I doubt I'll be the one making this choice - if I want a 2021 smartphone, it's the 888 or 870 only.

5G is a way better technology than 4G but i'm in india rn and in a urban area where 4G speed sucks. Imagine in rural areas then. So i think they 1st need to provide 4G properly and then think about 5G. Also 855+ is a 4G processor but the image quality and efficiency is no less than any 5G processor and way better than oneplus nord's so called Snapdragon 765g 5G can take. Also nord comes with only one 5G band which is a hoax.

Qualcomm is in it to sell... And customers expect them to launch a next generation chip every year.
OEM's can't really use last years high end SoC on next year's flagships without customers getting angry at the OEM. Therefore it's better for both parties that you take a last gen SoC, boost the performance a bit and give it a new name.

Intel has done it for years:D

SD870 is just a rebranded SD865 with slightly higher clock speed.

Now Qualcomm can label it as a 2021 chip and charge x(price of SD865) + y(additional rebranding cost)

Other than that there will not be any changes in day to day performance of SD865 and SD870

I fully agree @srd with you, a price reduction in SD865+/SD870 would be a good option for a new phone, but on the long run still a good choice in terms of futuristic possibilities
SD888 is definitely my number one pic.

Interesting thread. IMHO, I think today is more important the battery life balance than pure power, because the top processors are allegedly overpowered for mobile devices.

    Hello @dnagpaldg nice thread!
For tech enthusiasts I think they will never be thinking an alternative to the best of what Qualcomm has to offer, even if the performance gains were few. But as tech enthusiasts are a small percentage of people who buy smartphones, this 870 chip is the perfect solution for everyone as it is based on price / performance.
