Hey guys! This is Wissam @wissou from the US Brand Ambassadors. Now that the OnePlus 7T is out, let’s talk about one of my favorite specs: the triple camera system.

But first, let’s answer this question: What is a pixel?

A pixel is a tiny dot or square of color that is part of a digital image. A digital image (picture) consists of millions of these pixels or picture elements in different colors and different color intensities. The word Pixel is a twist on the words "picture" and "element" combined.

So, what are megapixels in a camera? Digital camera megapixels are simply pixels expressed in millions. There are one million pixels in a megapixel.

Pixels are created when the light that flows through the camera lens is captured into a device inside the camera called the Image Sensor. The image sensor has millions of light-capturing wells or cavities called photosites. Each of these photosites have specific locations and are arranged in rows and columns like a spreadsheet.

The information about the qualities of the light captured in each of these photosites is recorded and transferred to the camera memory. When the information is reproduced, the pixels are shown as continuous varying tones and colors that we view as the final image or "picture".

Now that we know what the base of the camera system is, let’s dive in the OnePlus 7T triple cameras.

    Rear camera - Main
    Sensor: Sony IMX586
    Megapixels: 48
    Pixel Size: 0.8 µm/48M; 1.6 µm (4 in 1)/12M
    Lens Quantity: 7P
    OIS: Yes
    EIS: Yes
    Aperture: f/1.6

    Telephoto Lens
    Megapixels: 12
    Pixel Size: 1.0µm
    Aperture: f/2.2

    Ultra Wide Angle Lens
    Megapixels: 16
    Aperture: f/2.2
    Field of View: 117°

So basically, in every situation when you need to take a picture, the triple camera got you covered: need to take a group picture? Use the wide angle. Need to take a picture of a bird without getting too close? Boom the telephoto is here for you. In all other cases, the main 48MP camera is there.

“But why does the main camera outputs a 12mp picture even though it’s 48mp then?” I have seen that question many times on the forums, so let me take a little bit of time to talk about pixel binning.

Pixel binning is the process of combining the electric charge from adjacent CMOS or CCD sensor pixels into one super-pixel, to reduce noise by increasing the signal-to-noise ratio in digital cameras. The binning happens on groups of four pixels that form a quad but some sensors can merge a block of up to 4×4 pixels (16 pixels) instead of 2×2 (4 pixels). By doing this, the sensor is increasing the relative sensitivity by 4 (signal to noise ratio), but also reducing the (spacial) resolution by 4. The combined pixels are sometimes called “super-pixels.”
The reason for being of binning is to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR or noise reduction), In modern camera, this is particularly useful to obtain higher brightness in extreme low-light conditions, like in the nightscape mode.

With less noise from the analog data, the image can be subjected to higher levels of gains/amplifications during the post-processing phase. This will also offer an opportunity to obtain higher quality low-light images.

This is a key feature of the OnePlus cameras to enable the best quality for your photographic needs.

What is your favorite camera out of the 3?
