Just my 2 cents: all of this "OnePlus, Oppo, and the whole BBK company copying Apple" hoopla seems to be quite overblown. Not only was the notch obviously a thing before the iPhone X popularized it (Essential Phone, Sharp Aquos S2 series, etc.), but Oppo also patented 12 different types of smartphone display notches earlier than any of these notched phones were released; patents granted January 9, 2017. Anyway, that said, the notches on the OnePlus 6/Oppo R15/Vivo X21 are far less obtrusive than on the iPX, since they are seemingly about half the size of the iPX's notch, if not smaller, and are more similar to the notches on the newly-announced Huawei P20 series, therefore still allowing adequate notification space and function given proper optimization. It's also because of this wide variance in notch size between Huawei's and the BBK corporation's (OP, Oppo, Vivo) offerings compared to what Apple has that allow all three to implement notches like this without patent infringement issues.
Furthermore, OnePlus could have opted for a lack of a top bezel, à la Xiaomi Mi Mix 2/2s, but this creates further inconvenience as 1. The front facing camera, proximity and ambient light sensors, and LED notification light all have to get crammed at the already crowded bottom of the smartphone, which already has space being taken up by a speaker unit, charging port, headphone jack, microphones, and more; 2. You've gotta turn your phone upside down for a decent selfie, if the camera app even allows the user to do that; and 3. There's now less internal room for an earpiece/top speaker in the phone, as well as the display driver ribbon cable at the bottom.
From this I can segway into my next point: the chin, as slight as it may be, still has to exist because of said display driver ribbon cable having to exist at the bottom of the phone, at least for an OLED...and mounting an OLED display upside down causes the infamous OP5 jelly effect due to opposite pixel refresh direction. Even though I, personally, would prefer simply a small bezel instead of the notch, it's undeniable that the screen on the device is bigger with the notch, especially given how thankfully small the notch here is. So, as it stands right now, whether I love it or hate it, the notch/microscopic chin combo, or microscopic bezel combo on the GS9's, is the closest we're gonna get to "all screen front" we're gonna get right now
