I'm Vaisakh Shabu(thecursedchild), a student and a hobbyist photographer from Kerala,India. I got into photography a couple of years ago when I joined the college for the engineering degree. I have never owned a camera,so I always used my phones to shoot pictures.
I started my OnePlus journey with the OnePlus 2 back in 2015. Since then I have owned three OnePlus phones-OP3, OP5 and OP6.

I used to post the photos on Instagram for almost 3 years now, but it is only recently that I started sharing my photos in the forums. I joined the ShotonOnePlus monthly threads in March, 2019 and won the contest. Then I started posting in the forums regularly. I met some amazing talents here and it also helped me push myself to explore more.

Let me thank @Crystal Z. and other staffs for believing in me and giving me such an opportunity to work on this project. I also wish to thank all my friends here in the community who supported me since day one.

    Here's my story...

    15th August 2019

While I was getting ready in the morning to go out, I got a message from Crystal.I was really surprised and curious to know why she's messaging me.(this was our first ever conversation). She asked me if I would be interested in joining the Sample Shot program for a new OnePlus device.I was really shocked and happy at the same time. She briefed the idea and I obviously agreed to join.

In a couple of days, she sent me an NDA and I signed it.

    The long wait....

As you can imagine, I was really excited.Crystal shipped the phone on 23rd August.DHL picked it up and the package reached Banglore on 25th August. I thought I'd get the package by 27th,but there was a lot of customs clearance procedures to be finished. While, @antonyjen received his device on 28th,I had to wait for another week, and the package was finally delivered on 2nd September.

    The Prototype

The prototype came in a simple cardboard box. There was no charger or cable. The device was covered with a plastic case hiding all the design details.
At first, glance I thought it's the OnePlus 7T Pro(or whatever they call it ) because the device felt huge in hands.
The display is tall, flat and has a waterdrop notch. I believe it's a 1080p panel but is has a 90Hz display.Oh boy, I never feel like using 60Hz display again.

The body is blueish. The speaker grills on the top and bigger than the one on the OnePlus 7 Pro.It has a triple camera setup - Regular 48MP, a wide angle and a 2X Telephoto lens. The speakers sounded great and it's a great improvement over my OP6.

I planned to use the phone as my daily driver but unfortunately I couldn't use sim cards on the phone( because of some carrier restrictions).

I was invited to a group chat by Crystal where I met @antonyjen , @OverDrive H. , @Vito B. and Zake Zhang. We were given more details of the program and the guidelines we should follow.

Since I got the device,I was so excited to test out the cameras but the weather was really aweful. Mostly cloudy and rainy.

After a couple of days,I planned to go out to for a sunset. Luckily the weather wasn't that bad and I managed to get a few good shots. That started my journey with the prototype.

    Here are the shots.

Shooting on the 7T has been a wonderful journey. The cameras on this device is solid and is getting better with updates.(Kudos to the camera and software team for the fast updates and fixes).

The macro mode is my favorite of newly introduced features. The ability to use all the three lenses in macro mode is a great addition.

The camera app has got a lot faster. The dynamic range is pretty solid and the low light shots have good overall details.
Nightscape has major improvements, you can get well detailed night shots using the night mode.

There are a few minor issues I noticed, like the oversaturated reds which I hope the team will fix soon.

It's really happy to see that OnePlus is focusing on the cameras and are improving a lot with each iteration.

A few photography techniques I use

Here are some of the photography tips I use while shooting.

    Take your time to shoot.

Don't rush. Observe the scene, give it some time. If you wait, there are chances that you get a better subject, or a movement or even a surprise in your frame.

    Grid

I always have the 3x3 grid enabled in my camera app. It helps to frame the scene better and helps in composing.

    Low-angle shot

You can get interesting POVs when you shoot from a low angle. It makes the subject look strong.

    Human Elements

I always try to bring some human elements in my pictures. Including human subjects in your images helps to show the scale and makes the photos interesting.

    Trying out different angles

Shoot the same subject from different angles. This gives different POV to the images and makes it more interesting.

    Pro mode

Learn to use the pro mode. My favorite feature of the OnePlus camera app is the Pro Mode. If you are someone like me, who like to process the pictures after shooting, Pro Mode is a blessing for you.

It let's you play with the camera settings, allowing you to explore the capabilities of the camera.

Since the aperture is fixed,ISO and Shutter Speed are the ones you should focus on.

Higher ISO = More Light but more noise.

Here's how I adjust the pro mode settings(this is my personal preference, and it works for me most of the time)

1.First,I keep the ISO as low as possible.

2.Then I adjust the shutter speed according to the scene and light.

3.If I find any motion blur, I increase the ISO gradually and use a faster shutter speed.

Low ISO means less light but more details. When in good daylight conditions, low ISO will do the job for you. But things get tricky when you shoot in low light. You can use the ISO-Shutter Speed combination to get the desired results.

You can try this out and let me know how it works for you.

    RAW

A raw image contains the minimally processed data from the sensor. The OnePlus camera app can shoot in raw. You can enable raw output from the Pro Mode settings.

The raw output will be minimally processed and will be rich in details. It gives you more flexibility in post processing.

The raw output on the 7T is rich in details and colors are really good. Definitely try it out if you like post processing your images.

    Post-Processing Apps.

Post process your photo when it needs it. There are a lot of tools out there you can try, and you can easily do it on your phone.

I always edit my pictures on the phone itself. There are powerful tools like Adobe Lightroom, Snapseed and VSCO which helps to fine tune your images.

All of these have support for RAW editing.Try them out.
