Wow, zombie thread created by someone working their 5 initial posts actually creating some discussion (sort of).
    • I put myself through university playing poker.
    • I didn't have the stamina (or skill?) to try to make a career out of it, went with a real job instead. I still wonder what might have been, probably made the right call.
    • I now play home games a couple of times a month for £10 buy in, we spend more on beer & pizza than anything.
    • I play blackjack & 3 card poker for fun. Low stakes, +£450 from last 4 visits, including beer, food & taxi (sadly no free alcohol in UK). Could just as easily have been -£200, I have a passing familiarity with statistics.
    • My girlfriend has a friend who's a genuine addict. I've seen her blow £500 on roulette in 15 mins, we've tried to talk to her about it but she absolutely refuses to listen.
People who want to screw up their lives will find a way to do it, regardless of any regulations governments try to impose - Prohibition worked out so well back in the day. Probably better to lose that £500 on the table than up her nose, which I've also seen.

As they say on the posters, don't gamble anything you're not willing to lose. Call the Gambling Awareness hotline for help & more info.

Saddest part is, that the endorphin rush is triggered on "near misses", so addicts actually "play to loose" to a certain extent. Not that it matters, because of course its rigged - humans, don't understand statistics, casinos do. Humans believe in lucky streaks, casinos don't. Humans double down, casinos gift them entire suites to stay longer.. One armed bandit sounds are a science in themselves, companies like Zynga design motivation curves and hooks based on revenue return, and fire employes that can't match it, Casinos in Vegas dont have clocks in them and are designed to give no indication as to the time of day, ...

Gambling isn't a social activity per se, I believe, but can act as a form of social glue, but I don't believe this to be inherent to social gambling - it "all under the same ruleset" type of group dynamics imho, also its common that once the game starts, everyone is talking mostly about the game, so its an equalizer in that regard as well -

There was a good documentary about gambling addiction by Alexis Conran you could watch:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcthree/2012/03/gambling-and-me-the-real-hustler-alexis-conran.shtml

edit: Could be this one, could be not... I'd have to rewatch it to be sure...

edit: Rewatched parts and I believe it is not. This might be the episode on the show that lead into the full documentary. edit: No, it is the documentary I was referring to - watch it.

Also the breaking Vegas documentary is always fun and educational. :)

And for a history lesson on gambling I recommend
Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants:

    :)

I myself play Hold 'em but only occasionally with friends in a social setting.

There are 2 distinct types of gambling:
1: Social gaming where only those taking part win / lose.
2: Gaming organised and encouraged by 3rd parties, whose sole intention is to rig the betting to collect a percentage of the money changing hands.
I'm OK with the first although I don't do it but I find it rather sad, the amount of money spent on advertising and sponsorship (lots of football / rugby teams have shirts sponsored by gambling companies at vast expense), as soon as it's half time in a televised match, you are encouraged to bet on the outcome.
Obviously those bettors don't realise that all that advertising and sponsorship has to be paid for and it's not the betting company that's paying.
