    Hey everyone,

I am thrilled to share the story behind a new feature we have been developing for over a year. A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into pioneering an in-display fingerprint sensor powerful enough to forever change the way you interact with your phone. We call it Screen Unlock.

We believe the best technology has to be meaningful; enabling you to perform day-to-day tasks with greater speed and convenience or empowering you to do things you’ve never done before. These are the parameters we use to evaluate all technology. We unlock our phones dozens of times a day, so the technology powering your unlocking experience must be reliable and efficient.

Screen Unlock is much more than a module attached to the back of the screen, it encompasses a wide array of software processes and hardware components that were carefully tuned to work perfectly with the OnePlus 6T. It all starts with a new optical fingerprint module, which houses a small lens that can accurately register your fingerprint as it presses down on the cover glass. The screen is used as a light source to enhance the outline of your fingerprint, enabling the sensor to accurately read its exact dimensions and shape. We use a dedicated ‘Trust Zone’ found in the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 to store your fingerprint information, which serves as an isolated virtual space for the sake of confidentiality. Whenever Screen Unlock is used, your fingerprint is compared to the information stored in the Trust Zone to ensure authenticity and actively defend against false patterns.

We spent months shaving milliseconds off the unlock time and carefully refining the unlock animation to ensure a satisfying experience. Through the use of several software algorithms, Screen Unlock will learn to recognize your fingerprint with higher accuracy through extended use. In combining the latest hardware with self-learning software algorithms that intelligently preload your fingerprint information, we have created an incredibly fast in-display unlock experience. Screen Unlock marks a momentous leap forward in unlock technology, delivering unmatched speed and convenience.

Screen Unlock has been in development for a long time. We first tried to implement it on the OnePlus 5T. Early prototypes featured a 1st generation optical fingerprint module. Though much larger in size than the 2nd generation model found on the OnePlus 6T, it struggled to hit a consistently high recognition rate. We attempted to compensate for the unreliable module through intelligent software optimizations. But, after numerous tests, we concluded our in-display fingerprint sensor wasn’t ready to deliver the speed and reliability our users deserved. With the help of our community, we created two unlock methods that led the industry for speed and convenience – a record-setting fingerprint sensor and our acclaimed Face Unlock feature. Now, after continuous testing and refining, we are finally ready to share Screen Unlock with the world.

We believe innovation is about pushing the limits of technology together with our users. This is the OnePlus way. Thank you for guiding us in creating an experience that is at once fast, intuitive, and convenient. I cannot wait for you to experience Screen Unlock on the OnePlus 6T!

    Never Settle

It will be interesting if the screen will turn on automatically when this area is touched. The one thing with initial attempts is you have to turn the screen on to them unlock it which is inconvenient Vs rear fps

I just hope it works well.

I'm preparing myself to have an experience slower than I have on my OnePlus 6, but I'll have to try it for myself.

I'm also curious to see if I'm going to use it after the novelty factor wears off. Nowadays, I mainly use the excellent Face Unlock.

But it's nice to read the story behind it, thanks for sharing it

Great stuff and also pleasing to hear how open you are about the fact it was developed over a year ago. Sometimes, things take a bit more time to refine and get it right. There's no point rushing out to market with the latest innovation, for it only to fail and not be as successful as it can possibly be. Looking forward to trying this first hand!

Great... op6t would be the fastest and smoothest of all phones existing on the planet, but it would be good if u have implemented that on OnePlus 6 too.

Thats a great news, I am looking forward to that, as I am not a fan of the fps on the back. Really a step forward.

Curious to try that out. Glad that the tech most of us saw as sci-fy 2-3 years ago finally is turning into reality. :p

Seeing that you are abandoning the old FP sensors and risking it all in just the screen unlock sensor, must mean you are quite confident about it. Hope it will live up to what we have come to expect from OnePlus. :)

And yeah, the face unlock works fine most of the times and its really fast and accurate, But anyone that was used to the front FP sensor will still miss that occasionally (when the phone is on the table or just in a position that can't see the face). So having the screen unlock feature will surely make the entire unlock experience more complete. :)
