Land of Medicine Buddha - Part I
Near the northern tip of Soquel, California and bordering The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park lies The Land of Medicine Buddha, a Tibetan Buddhist retreat nestled amongst the giant redwoods.
At the main center, beautiful prayer wheels, a gong, a large iron and bronze bell, and a golden Buddha statue can be found.

The Land of Medicine Buddha loop trail consists of a 6-mile loop, a 3-mile loop, and the 8-Verses loop. The 8-Verses loop is a short 1.2 mile easy hike.

As you enter this trail, you will encounter the 100,000 Stupa project under construction. The stupa is a replica of the Mahabodhi stupa located in eastern India.
Along the 8-Verses loop, you will encounter colorful prayer flags and sign posts containing one of eight verses from the Dalai Lama.

Near the end of the loop, there's a small area where people commemorate their pets that have moved on to Nirvana.

Land of Medicine Buddha - Part II

Just past the entrance to the 8-Verses loop trail is a two-story temple. Inside the temple, the walls are lined with rows of stupas commemorating loved ones who have passed on from this life and hopefully attained Nirvana.

In the center of the temple sits a large golden Buddha statue that stretches to the ceiling.

Outside of the temple is a pedestal containing a small, brightly colored Buddha with outstretched hands. This embodies wellness through teaching, meditation, prayer, and healing.

This is a wonderful place for a hike. Serene and peaceful, a perfect location to get away from the stresses of everyday life.

    Seacliff State Beach

This past weekend my wife, youngest daughter, and dog Auggie accompanied me to Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, a small town just south of Santa Cruz, California.

In the early 1800's, Seacliff Beach became a successful shipping port with a thriving logging industry in the nearby redwood forests. It was also a place where King Kamehameha III would hire Mexican vaqueros to come to Hawai'i to teach local Hawaiians how to raise and manage cattle.

The stretch of sandy beach is largely unremarkable with the exception of a pier that juts out into the sea.

What is remarkable is what's found at the end of the pier, the remains of a concrete ship.

The SS Palo Alto was a concrete tanker built at the end of World War I. Too late to be put into service for the war, the ship was mothballed. In 1929, the ship was brought to Seacliff beach where she was intentionally sunk and used as an entertainment center containing a dance floor, cafe, swimming pool, and carnival games. Several years ago, a severe storm damaged the ship resulting in a section of the ship overturning and damaging the pier.

A chain-link fence now separates the pier from the remains of the ship.

Indifferent to the history of the beach and the pier, Auggie enjoyed digging up the sandy beach looking for buried treasure.

Seacliff Beach is a popular spot for fishermen, joggers, cross-fitters, and dog walkers alike. And the beach is Auggie-approved!

    RacerZ’s SoCal Vacation 2022 - Part I

At the end of February, my youngest daughter had President’s week off from school. So we decided to spend four days in Southern California to enjoy the beaches, do a little hiking, and maybe visit a haunted house. To save money (and to avoid Covid), we decided to do a 6.5 hour road trip rather than a one hour flight.

Three hours into our trek, we took a brief detour to Kettleman City just off Interstate 5 to feed the horses under the hood (bonnet for you UK chaps) and our empty stomachs. Bravoland is your typical tourist trap consisting of souvenir shops, an ice cream parlor, and an eatery fashioned as a small town from the Old West.

After our stomachs no longer complained and another 3.5 hours on the road, we finally reached our destination, the Marriott Newport Coast Villas in Newport Beach. This is the third time we have stayed here. The view is always breathtaking.

Our plans for these four days included Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Dana Point, La Jolla, and San Diego. However, this day was pretty much over. Of course, it’s never too late for shopping at the Lido Marina Village off Newport Bay.

Porsche Design store… Now that’s my kind of shopping! The Porsche Design store is actually located in Costa Mesa at the South Coast Plaza shopping mall. This mall is the largest mall in California and the 4th largest in the US.

After a very long day it's time to say good night! Stay tuned for Part II - Santa Monica Pier.

I like the photographs 🖼️ and the narration of your trip. 😍 The Bravoland is very much similar to as picturised in the many cowboys movies from Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood etc. 👍 Have you bought a souvenir from the Porsche Design store? Poor store clerk fella.. :p
The Lido Marina Village seems to be a posh & chic area. :)
Eagerly waiting for the next part. :)

RacerZ’s SoCal Vacation 2022 - Part II: Santa Monica Pier/Muscle Beach

Tuesday, February 23rd, our first full day in SoCal. We got up early as it would take us 1.5 hours to drive to the Santa Monica Pier from Newport Beach. If you’ve ever been to SoCal then you know the area is sprawling and the traffic is horrendous. But as bad as the traffic was, it always seemed to move and 99% of drivers used their turn signals before changing lanes. In contrast, drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area seem to possess turn-signal muscles that have long since atrophied. (Signaling where I live seems to cause other drivers to speed up to prevent you from getting in front of them. No wonder we have so many dive-bombers… and accidents!)

We arrived at Santa Monica Pier around 10:30 AM. The large Santa Monica Yacht Harbor sign greeted us invitingly. The first thing I noticed was the tire marks at this wide intersection. This was either the product of a recent sideshow or we needed to be extremely cautious while crossing the street.

We managed to safely navigate across the street and made our way towards the pier.

Bisecting our path is the Ocean Front Walk that stretches from the top of Santa Monica all the way down to Marina Del Rey, an hour and 17 minute walk if you’re so inclined.

The pier is a historical landmark dating back to 1909 offering carnival games, restaurants, t-shirt and souvenir shops, vendor carts, and street performers. There’s even a roller coaster and the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel with breathtaking views of Santa Monica and the coastline.

The beaches stretching along Santa Monica down to Marina Del Rey are some of the flatest and cleanest beaches I’ve ever seen. (We did notice a small tractor with a skid steer bucket most likely used in attaining such flatness.)

It was getting close to lunch time, so we grabbed a bite at The Albright. My wife had the lobster roll and my daughter and I had mussels and fries. Of course, we had to try the New England clam chowder.

After a delicious lunch, we strolled down Ocean Front Walk to the Original Muscle Beach. This is not the Muscle Beach in Venice made popular by celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead, this “Original” Muscle Beach was established in the 1930’s and features gymnastics-style apparatus. I was fortunate enough to watch a person performing aerial silk acrobatics.

    Next stop, Venice Beach!

It seems like car drifting tyre marks. Is drifting possible at this intersection?

It does look like a sideshow occurred here and the intersection is definitely wide enough. SoCal and the Bay Area are known for their sideshows with hundreds of people attending. Police are pretty much powerless to stop so many cars and people from participating.
