    I updated to Android 9 and I've noticed that the fonts are very small in the default watch.
    also at login the fonts are very small.
    enlarging characters in the options doesn't take effect.
    any suggestions?

    Maybe you have installed google clock (ore any other clock app) That's not how it looks on OxygenOS default app.

    No, I'm sure that this is the original clock that came with my OnePlus 3T.

    that is the stock clock from OOS 9.0.4.

    You have to set a time for the countdown timer, then it looks exactly like the OP screenshot.

    Are you sure? As I don't have any issues changing font sizes for the clock, changing from system font from Default > Largest, I can clearly see a difference in font sizes.

    See screenshots for example;

    and yes changing font size from system has effect only on the strings, clock name, but not into the clock.
    I liked it much more before, the clock /timer was much more readable
    thanks again for answering.
