New Mobile Startup Announces Software Partner for Upcoming Flagship

SEATTLE – January 7, 2014– Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, and Steve Kondik, CTO of Cyanogen Inc., today announced the official partnership of OnePlus and Cyanogen Inc. for OnePlus’ flagship device. The CyanogenMod team will develop a customized software experience with specially designed features and exciting new elements debuting on the first OnePlus phone.

    Unparalleled Collaboration

OnePlus and Cyanogen Inc. will collaborate on both hardware and software to create what will be the first commercial CyanogenMod product. Combining a yet to be unveiled version of CyanogenMod with the latest and highest end hardware, the flagship OnePlus phone is poised to provide a fast, secure and beautiful device for Android users.

“What’s coming is one of the most popular mobile operating systems specifically developed for the best hardware, with a unique twist,” said Lau. “The smartphone industry is ripe for disruption, and 2014 should prove to be a huge year for the future of the market.”

“Upon hearing Pete’s vision for OnePlus, it was clear we had found the right partner,” said Kondik. “By combining our software expertise with Pete’s background in hardware and design, we’ll develop a phone that will exceed both of our expectations.”

    OnePlus One

OnePlus was founded to create devices that combine performance with premium quality and sleek design. The debut OnePlus device, the OnePlus One, is expected in the first half of 2014. The phone will launch in select markets and expand to more global availability.

Hey G, saw you were also here...

so that's the "big announcement"? Not really a surprise!
Pete is definitely having background in hardware and design but OnePlus is not a hardware providing company. So they have to have a hardware partner XYZ, which is most likely OPPO. But so far it sounds like it will be a 1+ phone with CM software. I think this is not true. I would say it will be an XYZ phone with 1+ branding, maybe specs set through 1+ and CM software.

1+ is gathering all the wishes from many customers how they want their phone. But then the manufacturer comes in and that's the one who says, that possible or that's not gonne happen. It has to be proofen if 1+ can fullfil the wishes of many followers in the expected time.
For example people want the SD805 CPU in the 1+1 phone and they want it to air in march. If Qualcom doesn't manage to ramp up the mass production of SD805 until that time, 1+ is stuck with SD800 or an other release date. So is OPPO. (by the way, for me it doesn't matter if 800 or 805).

Guess 1+ want to go the Google Nexus way here. Google took the basis for their Nexus 5 from the LG G2. So 1+ will most likely take OPPO's Find7 as basis for their 1+1.
