Weird Playstore Paradox.

  1. Drasm19 Honeycomb Jun 13, 2018

    Drasm19, Jun 13, 2018 :
Clickbait title aside, I've searched the forum in length looking for any similar problem but couldn't find one. If this has been already reported and resolved, please redirect me to the appropriate thread.

OOS Version: 5.1.2 (stable/ non- rooted)

So, here is the problem. My playstore works fine, as in it downloads and updates apps as it should. Today I noticed something weird, If I were to download a large app with an OBB file, the download won't start at all.

I tried looking into it. I found that in OBB folder ( Internal storage/android/OBB) it creates the necessary folder for the app but doesn't download the required OBB file. The same is true for all large apps with an OBB file in it.

    Solutions I've already tried:

    1. Clearing cache+data from Playstore/ Google Play services.
    2. Clearing cache from recovery and rebooting.
    3. Enabling background data for Playstore/ services.
    4. Resetting app preferences.
    5. A bunch of other fixes that I found online.

Alas, the problem persists. I'll be grateful to anyone who can help me to solve this troublesome conundrum.

P.S: Don't ask me to reset my device. I already did that after updating to android Oreo. I've a lot of apps installed on my device and I'd rather happily shoot myself in the head than going through all that 'pain-in-the-a**' process once again.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you have enough storage space ?

You can try to uninstall all update of playstore in app info.
It's the best way to solve issues with playstore.

I have close to 100gb of free space. I tried uninstalling the updates too, doesn't work.

I am running the same version. I found no such issues.
What application were you trying to download from playstore, any examples ?

    PUBG.
The download never starts at all. No issues with other apps, but if any app has OBB file in it, the download doesn't start at all.

Nothing, it just keeps on showing the progress bar, although no downloading actually happens.
I live in China, so I'm accessing playstore via VPN, I've heard that VPN + wifi= mobile data, could this be the problem?

maybe an issue with vpn then.
usually with mobile data, this screen comes
    1528919857932.jpg
so we have to untick this option to download on mobile data.

plus vpn + wifi is not mobile data bro.

Yes. Even though Android is open source, they don't allow any Google products installed on their devices and substitute their own. They have to use a VPN or find a loophole.

so this is the reason OP uses Oxygen OS in rest of world and Hydrogen OS in china.

Well, there is an app called Blackmart. Download it through a web browser. It has all the apps of playstore

I found out the reason. Turns out android 8.1 natively has this issue, many pixel users have also reported this. When you use WiFi along with VPN, the phone wrongly assumes that you are using a metered connection/ mobile data and stops downloading large apps and background sync etc. The only workaround is to enable unlimited data access on both WiFi and mobile data networks.

Thankyou for your inputs. Have a nice day.
