Someone has said well, Ignorance is Bliss..
Buy VPN, Buy black berry or black phone buy a Knox premuim or install BBM buy some independent encrypitive algorithm security software. Start wearing hoodies, caps, shop with cash no coupons and cards. Yeah pretty much crazy...have fun

Wechat is ok for fun short messages but if you need to send pics etc it doesn't always work, very annoying bugs - pics don't appears correctly at recipient end and hypertext doesn't appear/works

I like Telegramm, it's encrypted and works on most devices, not just your phone. I just use Whatsapp to communicate with people who don't like telegramm. :)

I'd go with BBM. It's on BlackBerry, obviously, Android, and iOS, and will soon be on WP. A good messaging platform shouldn't force people to have a Google or Facebook account. BBM only requires you to setup a BlackBerry ID and associate it with a device. If you change devices, you simply move the ID to the new device. BBM doesn't require you to give your phone number out. That may seem trivial to some, but not to me. If I decide to break off contact with someone on WhatsApp, they still have my phone number and can be a nuisance if they choose. Not on BBM.

BBM isn't the only one that tells you whether a message has been delivered and/or seen, but I consider that a requirement for any messaging platform that I'd want to use.
