If you want to be able to COMMUNICATE, there is nothing like Whatsapp, honestly. No other app gets even close to their 500 Million users, and I think that's what really matters.

By the way, which is your source when you claim that they can sell the content of your messages to third party entities? That's not exactly what they claim:
    Source: http://www.whatsapp.com/legal/

When it comes to competitors. I would recommend the following options (sorted by personal valoration):
    1. Telegram: UI looks pretty much like Whatsapp, but it's got some nice additional features and supports "more" platforms. If it wasn't for its lesser number of users, I would use that instead of whatsapp.
    2. Hangouts: It is OK, I like it. But again, you won't be able to find half of your contacts.
    3. Line: A bit childish and spammy in my opinion.
    4. Viber: I was using it for about one week and didn't find any good reason to keep in in my phone. Quite irresponsible in terms of performance.

Telegram is the most secure one if you only care about texting.
If you also want voice and video calling, you got Line or Viber.
