As far as i experienced, the sensor seems to be non functional if i block the front camera completely. So i hope they are using the front camera. Though i learnt that they are using a software based proximity sensor.

I know I'm late but it actually doesn't have a proximity sensor. It has a virtual contraption that tries to figure out proximity to things. It messed up my navigation when I just got my phone jumped in my car and tried to navigate somewhere. Navigation was so slow and laggy. It's okay now thanks to the AI element that's being used. But no it doesn't have a sensor.

Yeah I heard about the virtual sensor a couple of weeks ago, I assumed at the time oneplus would have used the same method as Samsung (under display sensor in the s10) but instead they decided to use some half baked system which has caused problems for many users.

    *#808# does nothing.

As I have found out *#808# doesn't work anymore as they removed it on Oxygen 9.5.11

Yes, proximity sensor is under the screen. You can check by,
    1)Turn off your screen
    2) Take another mobile and open camera
    3) check the phone screen through the camera
The purple color light will be glowing below the front camera is nothing but proximity sensor. You can check any phone by this process.

*#808# is not working. So that means they removed engineering mode ? I'm using OnePlus 8 . There are some issues regarding gyroscope. I should calibrate. Please help me to solve the issue.

i think oneplus removed the users ability to enter engineering mode now. I'll say that you should get your device checked at a service center for any major issue if there is one.
