OxygenOS Widevine L3 - Will it return to L1 after relock, or is there any way to have L1 on custom ROMs?

See title - I get that if it's locked, it's L1 - Google Pixel 2 is L1 on both...if we relock will we get L1 again, and/or can custom ROMS get around this?

OnePlus 6 comes with drm l1 and Netflix hd support. To read drm keys, you now need a locked bootloader, it is now a requirement. Unlocking will make them unreadable(L1->L3), but not delete the keys, so relocking will give you L1 again.

It's a requirement by who, exactly? Why can the Pixel 2 keep L1 unlocked but the OP6 can't is the question, I suppose.

How does it make them unreadable? With root, all things are possible.

It's quite a disappointment to me. Not sure if I'll keep the OP6 now based on that, because I love to mod but also enjoy Netflix. What happened to being very Dev friendly?

Widevine L1 certification is separated from the ROM. Loading a custom ROM or rooting your phone won't make it L3. Take it from a OnePlus 5 user with rooted phone.

Google. Ask them, they do shit like this all the time, wew. It's a new requirement. Even the 5/T can be unlocked without losing the ability to read DRM keys.
Afaik, it's stored in a separate partition. Magisk should be able to be able to make it readable, but only time will tell.
    It's a new thing.

Magisk shouldn't have anything to do with it. Root is root, which means we could back it up with twrp, etc. The library that reads the partition just craps out if the bootloader is unlocked, but we can get around that! Maybe Xposed or something.

At this point magisk is root hahahaa
Yep, doesn't really sound the worst actually. But it's too soon to say. Not watching the cl final? :)

    CL Final????

I wonder if the libs are compatible enough to where we can migrate the 5T libs that don't care about the unlocked bootloader, over to the 6?

I don't think anyone will go that route, it's not just the OnePlus 6, it's all new devices that will have to follow this, sadly.

I can confirm we get L1 back after relocking. Tried it myself.
Still unavailable to use Google Assistent with Netflix on L3 :(
Netflix not shown in Play Store, but can install .apk file.
    Does work with L1...

Can someone at OnePlus please explain how the system works and tells if the bootloader is locked?

Has anyone found a way to "raise/lower" the levels from 3 to 1 *with* unlocked bootloader?

That's strange. When did you first realized this change happened? Did you buy the device directly from OnePlus?

It's stored in hardware, fuses or security tokens might also be used so no, you can't just use root to access it

If you got root on a locked bootloader it would be a different story
